AIR PICTURE — CHAGRIN FALLS, OH — 2026-07-18

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Significantly below-average traffic day — 140 contacts against a 7-day mean of 404 — with an unusual number of silent transponders aloft and two aircraft of non-U.S. registry operating without callsigns.

NOTABLE TRAFFIC

Low and slow: Several aircraft were observed below 6,000 ft in the vicinity. Contact AC1F0E at 4,900 ft doing 286 kts on a 43° heading stands out — fast for the altitude. AAL260, FFT3451, UAL457L, and SWA2337 were clustered near 41.42°N, 81.85°W between 800–1,550 ft, suggesting an approach corridor, likely CLE. SWA3900 checked in at a leisurely 119 kts and 2,525 ft — somebody is in no particular hurry.

High and fast: SWA2963 topped the speed board at 524 kts, 35,000 ft, heading 132°. A9E236 (no callsign) is cruising at a notably elevated 45,000 ft — the ceiling of the day.

Foreign visitors: DWC006 (Italy, ICAO 500292) at 39,000 ft, CJT482 (Canada, ICAO C059D2) at 29,500 ft, and BOX467 (Germany, ICAO 3C458F) at 33,000 ft all transited the area. They filed callsigns; the skies appreciated the courtesy.

ANOMALIES

Twenty-plus contacts are squawking Mode S transponders with zero flight ID — silent at cruise altitude. Two warrant specific mention: 0D0B73 (32,975 ft) and 873312 (40,975 ft) both carry ICAO hex codes outside any known national allocation range. They exist; they just don't appear to belong to anyone on paper. 3C4592 and 4007F9 are registered to Germany and the United Kingdom, respectively, but are also broadcasting no callsign. This office notes these things without drawing conclusions, as is tradition.

PATTERN NOTES

Traffic ran 65% below the 7-day average — a hard number that's hard to ignore. Regulars UAL521, DAL2839, UAL2131, SWA2469, AAL2840, UPS1446, UAL327, and roughly a dozen others failed to appear at their customary hours. Whether this reflects scheduling changes, weather upstream, or a collective decision to take Saturday off is beyond this office's remit to determine.
