AIR PICTURE — CHAGRIN FALLS, OH — 2026-09-19

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Unusually quiet day over the Falls — traffic running at roughly one-third of normal volume, with anomalies ranging from garden-variety Canadian overflights to something called SAM102 cruising at flight level 400.

NOTABLE TRAFFIC

SAM102 [AE6962] — The standout contact of the day. Military ICAO hex, callsign matching government/executive air transport prefix, altitude 40,000 ft. Somebody important, or somebody who wants you to think so. No further details in data; none needed to raise an eyebrow.

EJM90 [A03FAE] — Executive jet, 41,000 ft, 489 kts, eastbound heading 079°. Fast, high, and in a hurry — somebody's missing a meeting somewhere pleasant.

JRE398 [A4A15A] — Low and slow at 1,075 ft, 116 kts, heading northeast. Operating close to the deck near the western suburbs. General aviation traffic, unremarkable but visible.

KSF34/35/36/38/40 — A small fleet of low-altitude, slow-moving contacts (60–90 kts, under 3,200 ft) orbiting the local area throughout the day. Consistent with survey, patrol, or training operations. They were busy even when nobody else was.

ANOMALIES

MILITARY CONTACTS: Four military-hex contacts logged — VICE68 (AE5D5F) appearing three separate times, SPAR129, and the aforementioned SAM102. Additionally, one squawking as G98797 and G18098 on hex AE52A0/AE52D9. Military activity was modest but persistent.

UNKNOWN HEX CONTACTS: Five aircraft — QTR22B, QTR1X, RJA292, VTM341, XAVGH, and WIN1201 — carrying ICAO codes that fall outside any recognized national allocation. These are flagged and noted. Make of that what you will.

FOREIGN REGISTRATIONS: Canadian iron dominated the foreign contingent — Air Canada (ACA), Jazz (JZA), Air Transat (TSC-prefix ROU), Cargojet (CJT), WestJet (WJA). Two British Airways, one Lufthansa, one DHL UK, one Turkish (Dutch-registered), and two Qatar Airways with the unresolved hex. Busy North Atlantic corridor day despite thin domestic numbers.

LOW AND FAST: AAL3110 at 2,900 ft doing 246 kts. Flagged. Probably on approach; still gets a mention.

PATTERN NOTES

Today's total of 534 contacts sits at 66% below the 7-day average of 1,570 — a significant shortfall sustained throughout the entire observation window. Missing regulars numbered in the dozens across all operators: Delta, United, Southwest, Republic, SkyWest, FedEx, UPS — all running well below historical norms. No single obvious cause in the data. Worth a follow-up inquiry if the trend continues tomorrow.
