AIR PICTURE — CHAGRIN FALLS, OH — 2026-08-21
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Quiet day overhead — traffic running 36% below the 7-day average, with a small gallery of anonymous transponders and one contact that has no business being where it is altitude-wise.
NOTABLE TRAFFIC
BAW8K [406EC9] — British Airways, UK-registered, 37,000 ft, 528 kts, heading 64°. A transatlantic visitor making its way northeast. Perfectly legal; still gets a mention because it's British.
AMX406 [0D0B4B] / AMX025 [AA9BB7] — Two Aeromexico contacts overhead, both eastbound at 39,000 ft, speeds above 500 kts. AMX406 carries an ICAO hex that falls outside any known national allocation. Worth a note.
SIA7951 [76CCCB] — Singapore Airlines, eastbound at 33,000 ft, 557 kts, on a heading of 060°. Hex likewise unallocated. Long way from Changi.
AAL130 [AB3C0D] — Fastest named commercial contact today at 557 kts, 37,000 ft, heading 68°. Tied with SIA7951 for top speed honors.
PRY03 [A95D42] — Slow mover at 1,600 ft, 95 kts, heading 156°. Piston or turboprop territory. Sticking out among the jet traffic like a bicycle on a highway.
ANOMALIES
N1974Y [A18527] — Reported altitude: 80,100 feet. That is not a typo. Standard commercial ceiling is 45,000 ft. This contact is either a high-altitude research or military platform, or someone's encoder has had a very bad day. Flagged.
[AE145F] — No callsign, 36,000 ft, US military hex range. Active Mode S transponder, no flight ID broadcast. It is here; it is not telling us anything else.
[4D2039] — 43,000 ft, no callsign, hex falls outside all known national allocations. The transponder exists. The country does not.
[C011B6] — Canadian-registered, 41,000 ft, heading 51°, no callsign broadcast. Polite enough to squawk; not polite enough to introduce itself.
Seven additional no-callsign high-altitude contacts detected across the day. All had active Mode S. None felt like talking.
PATTERN NOTES
Traffic came in 36% light against the 7-day average of 382 aircraft. Missing regulars include DAL845, DAL2688, UAL1833, UAL2684, JBU2041, GJS4567, GJS4499, ASA786, and several others — an unusually long absentee list suggesting schedule disruption, routing changes, or a very slow Friday. The westbound parade at FL340–370 was well-represented. Low-altitude activity was sparse and unremarkable aside from PRY03 doing its own thing below 2,000 ft.
